The Damned were playing their celebratory 40th anniversary tour at the sold out HOB Anaheim this evening and they tore the paint off the walls in the process. The Damned have always held a special place in my heart. I loved them from the get go and I loved them through all the musical changes they embarked on over the last 40 years.

Really they're like The Beatles of punk (seriously-I mean it) the way they followed their muse and adapted and expanded their musical palette these many years.  Starting as a punk band evolving into a rock band, expanding to a psychedelic rock group and then having a fling with Gothic rock. There is nothing this band was ever afraid to try and more often than not they did it really well.

40 years on and Dave Vanian stills stalks the stage like a caged tiger and Captain Sensible is still anything but sensible (thank God) and for close to two hours they played a bit of everything from their 40 year career.

Vintage Trouble

This was the grand opening of the new HOB in Anaheim & Vintage Trouble was the perfect band to open this incredible new club. VT brought their A-Game to their blistering 65 minute headlining set. If you haven't seen them imagine a cross between  Otis Redding, & James Brown backed by a powerhouse 1960's British RnB combo. The newly painted walls of the club were in danger of peeling from all the heat VT was flame throwing from the stage.  Just an awesome evening, and a BIG thank you to the HOB staff who made it possible. Here is wishing them every success.

The Grove  Of Anaheim

What can I say about this group?  They look fantastic, they sound great and they put on a hell of a fun rock n' roll concert.  This was the bands first US tour in almost 8 years. They were hungry to play for their fans and they really brought a lot of energy to their set. And as expected the punters ate it up and rocked out. HORNS UP!!
As a photographer you really can't go wrong when the band looks this good now can you?
I wish all concerts were this much fun!

WOW!!! KWS put on a guitar hero clinic to a sold out crowd this evening. It was pretty much all a blues loving, guitar wailing fan could ask for. Among the many highlights for me were his surprise cover of The Stooges Search & Destroy!!!  Earl Kings "Come On" (done ala Jimi Hendix) and an absolutely stunning version of Voodoo Child that would have put a smile on Jimi's face.  And don't get me wrong KWS can write his own material too - His originals stood shoulder to shoulder with the covers in the set.  All in all a night to remember.

 These are all crowd shots, there is no pit at the Coach House venue. As I mentioned it was a sold out show so moving around was tough, but I'm pretty happy with the vibe of these photos. I think they captured the energy the band was putting out pretty nicely.

George Clinton & Parliament/ Funkadelic

I have to start this out by saying George Clinton and Parliament/ Funkadelic were absolutely amazing tonight. I am very lucky in that I get to go to a lot of concerts. I'm always shooting a show for a magazine and when I'm not I just like to go out and see a concert. It's pretty much my favorite thing  to do.
This concert was one of the best I've ever seen.

George and company hit the stage at a little after 8pm and proceeded to tear the roof off the venue for the next 2.5 hours. Playing a non-stop mix of funk, rap & psychedelic rock ( One Guitar player was wearing a Hendrix t-shirt another one had Hendrix stickers on his white Stratocaster...nuff said) .

The 16 different band members on stage were all so good and so in sync with each other, that instead of chaos they achieved a beautiful wave of funk that washed over a deliriously appreciative crowd.

This was a joyous, uplifting show in every way imaginable, and when it was over I felt a connection with  the audience around me. We all knew we had been witness to something very, very special.

I have only  felt this way at a handful of shows over the years, it's nights like this one that I put in my back pocket and really treasure.  DO NOT MISS THIS TOUR IF IT COMES TO YOUR CITY, you've been warned.
