House Of Blues-Anaheim, California
Starsailor 01 June, 2015 House Of Blues-Anaheim, California GREAT set tonight from the amazing Starsailor. I love this band, they always deliver the goods live and tonight was no exception. First tour in several years for these guys. It's good to see them back in action after a much too long hiatus. Hopefully a new album and another tour are in the near future. I shot these with a 70mm-200mm 2.8 and a 28-75mm 2.8, this was the first time I tried the 28-75mm and I was pretty happy with it. As is usually the case, the lighting at the HOB was very good tonight. Uli Jon Roth House Of Blues, Anaheim, California 22 January, 2015 I sometimes get so busy with shooting concerts that I occasionally forget to post some photos here on the blog. Anyway I just came across these pictures of Uli Jon Roth that I quite like, mostly because they remind me of the AWESOME concert he put on during the NAAM convention earlier this year. If you don't know Uli's history he was a founding member of the Scorpions and recorded some of the best heavy metal/rock music of all time. His guitar technique is so good and so fluid that it can leave you breathless. If I remember correctly I shot these with a 17mm-50mm 2.8 lens, the lighting was pretty good and I only wish you could have been there to hear a master at his craft. I did find a great video taken from the audience that night so give it a view. Ministry The Grove Of Anaheim 11 May, 2015 This on was a bit of a challenge, what with Uncle Al & company getting all scary in the dark and everything. I will give them props for not being shy and playing to the cameras. Al is a real pro when it comes to staking a stage! I shot these with a Nikon 85mm which opens up yo 1.8. I needed every bit of light that I could get into the camera because it was DARK, which is appropriate for a Ministry show. Actually I've seen Ministry at least half a dozen times over the years and they'd still be scary if the played at high noon under a bright sun in a playground. Some bands just have a knack for the spooky.... Vaadat Charigim The Constellation Room, Santa Ana, California 14 May, 2015 Cool show by Israeli band Vaadat Charigim touring to support their new release "Sinking As A Stone" on Burger records. They play a spacey brand of shoe-gaze sung in Hebrew. You don't hear that everyday..... Mazel Tov! The lighting for the show was pretty bad, mostly they just stuck it on one color per song and for some reason the guitar player and lead vocalist decided to set up on far stage left and he was completely in shadow all night. I only mention this because I was asked to shoot the show by the bands PR company and it made it much more difficult to get quality shots. These are some of the little things EVERY band that is starting out should think about. It really does pay off if you can maximize every opportunity to get press when you are in the early stages of your career. Later on, if you're lucky you'll have people to think about these things for you. I used an 85mm prime lens for most of these shots, it works well in low light situations and is always pretty sharp. If you're just starting out shooting concerts this is a lens that is not too expensive ($400-$500) and that I would recommend you picking up to add to your kit. Black Label Society The Grove Of Anaheim 19 April, 2015 This was the first time I had ever seen BLS and all I have to say is HOLY SHIT!! What a power house of a band. Every member is a top tier musician and the songs, delivered in a fine voice by Zakk Wylde, are fantastic. Not to mention the twin guitars served up by Mr. Wylde and Dario Lorino were jaw dropping. As far as photography went, the lighting was top notch, which is what the Grove of Anaheim is known for. I used a NIKON 85mm prime for all these shots. It's a CRAZY sharp lens and is fast becoming one of my favorites. Queensryche House Of Blues, Anaheim, California 27 March, 2015 Go4
The El Rey Hollywood, California March 24, 2015 Great show tonight by Go4. The band is touring on their excellent new album "What Comes Next" and with a new vocalist in tow they seemed energized and ready to prove worthy of their legacy. Great lighting tonight for photos. All of these were shot with a 70-200/2.8 lens. There was no photographers pit so I was shooting in the crowd. Only had one beer spilled on me so it was a good night! Moon Duo 22 March, 2015 The Constellation Room Santa Ana, California Moon Duo returned to the OC with their swirling, Kraut rock inspired, brand of psychedelic rock. Oddly enough there are three people in the band at the moment...but hey whats in a name? So tonight was another dark, dimly lit affair. These pictures were all taken with ISO settings between 4000-8000, I really gave my camera a work out tonight. All shot with a 17mm-50mm /2.8 and 70mm-200mm/2.8 lens.
